In the valley of the Ruffa
Torrent, between Ricadi and Spilinga, an oriental fern has been
discovered belonging to the family
of Blechnacea, an ancient surviving example of Mediterranean flora.
There are numerous
specimens of the fern.
Here it has managed to find
its natural habitat, which is generally in damp ravines in hilly areas
characterised by excessive humidity, a scarcity
of light and limited daily and annual variations in
temperature.
The discovery is important,
not only for the rarity of the type of fern, but above all because it
has been located in very few other parts of Italy.
The bed of the Ruffa torrent is the richest in this type of
fern.
