“The stretch of coastline which culminates in Capo Vaticano is full of history and beauty.  It could be called Costabella, with a pinch of regret and nostalgia”.  Thus writes the author Giuseppe Berto. The wild fascination of these places delighted the writer who decided to settle down here.  He described Capo Vaticano as follows:  “As soon as I saw it, I knew that that land, from which magic islands could be seen, was to be my second home, and here I came to live.  I am on a promontory high above the sea with a stupendous view.  And by day, from the tip of the promontory, when I look at the rocks and the little beaches a hundred metres below, I know that I find myself in one of the most beautiful places on earth”.

Giuseppe Berto was born on 27 December 1914 in Mogliano Veneto (Treviso).  He became well-known for his book “Il cielo è rosso” for which he won the Florence Literary Prize.  In 1956 he came to Capo Vaticano and decided to build his house there.  He also became a citizen of the commune of Ricadi in 1957 and  here he wrote “Il male oscuro” (1964) for which he won the Viareggio and Campiello Prizes.  His last book, “La gloria” was published just before his death.  He died in Rome on 1 November 1978 and is buried in the cemetery of San Nicolò di Ricadi.
