The area has been progressively depopulated by emigration and the wars destroyed many young lives, but the will to start again and to build up a welcoming and prosperous environment has survived. Thus on the ancient peasant civilisation a new generation of small entrepreneurs, shopkeepers and professional people has grown up who have brought about changes in the structures, customs and in the economic activities. These have been developing over the last few decades, above all in the field of tourism. The ancient district of Ricadi is today a modern, well-equipped commune which has exploited its natural position and encouraged its hamlets to take part in lively enterprises making use of its past inheritance together with new skills and opportunities of work and productivity. “Tourism is not only swimming, sightseeing, monuments and towns. It is also coming into contact with people and cultures different from our own, understanding and, perhaps, loving each other”. Giuseppe Berto
